Lifelike anatomy combined ...

Paul was developed by a team of medical professionals, biomedical engineers, sfx artists and software developers. Based on MRI data of real-life premature babies, Paul is an accurate representation of a preterm baby born in the 27th week of pregnancy. Overwhelmingly praised by neonatologists and NICU nurses for his highly realistic and convincingly lifelike features, Paul has already become Europe’s favourite new manikin.

with state-of-the-art simulation technology

While there have been made technological compromises in other preterm simulators due to their small size, this is where things really start to get interesting for Paul's engineers. Our team of biomedical engineers, animatronics specialists and hardware & software developers set out to incorporate cutting-edge simulator technology into the body of a premature baby measuring just 35cm for the first time. With its sophisticated sensor technology, physiological lungs and robust mechanics, Paul set new standards in the field of medical simulation. High-fidelity was yesterday, the future belongs to high emotion simulation.

Easy touch controls

Paul’s software control and UI was developed by experts in human factors design, software specialists and gamification. Our team broke new ground here too. Paul is the only simulator on the market, who’s control interface features a real time 3D animation of the simulator, which displays Paul’s current condition and actions taken (including current head position, tube depth, ventilation parameters and many more). The intuitive and user-friendly control software allows immediate use, without the need for tedious familiarisation with operating instructions. Set up, start the software, and begin your simulation training…

SIMCharacters Paul Full Package

In-situ training on a new level

Whether in the simulation centre or in the neonatal intensive care unit - training with Paul requires no annoying cables or complicated setup. Because: Paul can be operated completely wirelessly. Everything you need for your training session comes in a trolley in hand luggage format. The whole system is ready for use in just a few minutes. Paul was developed primarily for in-situ simulation training in neonatal intensive care units or first aid rooms.
Because we should be training where critical emergencies actually happen...

Paul's Story

Stories like Julie's are what made the Paul possible. Where people with different backgrounds, skills and abilities come together with a common vision, innovation can emerge. Paul's story is a story of such people.

The European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) is the first Europe-wide organization representing the interests of premature and newborn infants and their families. It brings together parents, experts from different disciplines and scientists with the common goal of improving the health of this patient group. EFCNI's vision is to give every prematurely born baby the best possible start in life. In 2018, EFCNI awarded our premature baby simulator "Paul" as a lighthouse project in the field of training and education.

FAQ

Do you have any questions?

How much does Paul cost?

This varies somewhat from country to country. However, we will be happy to send you an individual offer or refer you to one of our distributors.

What else do I need to train with Paul?

Nothing, except your normal equipment for the care of premature babies. Paul comes "ready-to-use", with router, control laptop, vital monitor and simulation stethoscope.

What can't I train with Paul?

In principle, you can train with Paul all conceivable care strategies and emergency scenarios in neonatology.

Do I need to integrate Paul into the IT of our hospital or simulation centre?

No. A question that always worries hospital IT. Paul works via the included router in an island network that does not require integration into the hospital network. Internet access is only needed for a software update that is carried out via remote maintenance. However, this does not have to be done at the clinic.

Is Paul a medical device?

No. Paul is not covered by the Medical Devices Act as he has no contact with patients. It is considered a "teaching aid" and has CE and UL certification.

What do I do if Paul is defective?

As we organise simulation training ourselves, we know how troublesome it is when a simulator does not work as it should or is defective. If you have purchased a maintenance contract with Paul, we will send you a loan unit immediately and you will send your Paul back to us in the transport box for servicing. The transport costs are included in your maintenance contract.
